Home Garden is committed to providing gardening and outdoor maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety, and wellbeing of our customers, visitors, staff, and any other persons who may be affected by our work. We aim to prevent accidents, minimise risks, and maintain a safe environment in every garden and property where we operate.
This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with gardening, landscaping, and related activities. It applies to all team members, including permanent staff, temporary workers, and contractors engaged by Home Garden.
We seek to achieve the following objectives in all gardening and maintenance work:
To prevent injury and ill health arising from our activities. To identify hazards and implement practical control measures. To ensure that equipment, tools, and materials are used safely and responsibly. To promote safe working procedures in gardens, courtyards, and outdoor areas. To protect customers, neighbours, visitors, the public, and the environment.
Management at Home Garden is responsible for providing clear leadership on health and safety matters. This includes ensuring that risk assessments are carried out for typical gardening tasks, such as lawn care, hedge trimming, planting, pruning, waste removal, and use of powered machinery.
Management will ensure that:
Suitable and maintained equipment is available for staff to carry out their work safely. Staff receive information and guidance on safe working procedures. Incidents, near misses, or concerns related to safety are recorded, reviewed, and addressed. Adequate time and resources are allocated to maintaining a safe working environment.
Every Home Garden team member has a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and for that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. All staff must:
Follow all safety instructions, procedures, and guidance provided. Use equipment, tools, and machinery only as trained and intended. Wear suitable clothing and personal protective equipment appropriate to the task and weather conditions. Report hazards, faults, incidents, and near misses to management without delay. Refrain from working under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that may impair judgement or ability.
Before beginning work at a property, our team will consider the specific risks present in that garden or site. Typical hazards may include uneven ground, trip risks, low branches, thorny plants, sharp tools, moving machinery, exposure to chemicals, and adverse weather.
Where necessary, informal or formal risk assessments will be conducted to identify hazards and decide on control measures. Control measures may include selecting appropriate tools, using guards and safety devices, setting up safe working zones, cordoning off areas where cutting or trimming is in progress, and adjusting work methods in response to weather or site conditions.
All tools and machinery used by Home Garden will be maintained in a safe condition as far as reasonably practicable. Staff will be instructed in the safe use of commonly used gardening equipment, such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, pruning tools, and digging equipment.
Key principles include:
Using the right tool for the job and checking equipment before use. Not removing safety guards or disabling safety mechanisms. Switching off and securing equipment before cleaning, adjusting, or transporting it. Storing tools safely to prevent falls, cuts, or unauthorised use. Ensuring fuel and other consumables are handled and stored safely where applicable.
Where gardening products such as fertilisers, soil improvers, or plant protection products are used, Home Garden will aim to select options that are appropriate and safe for the intended use. When products with specific handling or application requirements are used, instructions will be followed carefully.
Staff will avoid unnecessary exposure to sprays, dust, or residues and will take care to prevent contamination of water sources, neighbouring properties, and wildlife habitats. Customers will be informed, where appropriate, when products have been applied that require restricted access or caution.
Gardening work often involves lifting, carrying, digging, and repetitive movements. Staff are encouraged to use safe lifting techniques, share loads when necessary, and use mechanical assistance where available. Excessive strain, awkward postures, or repetitive tasks should be managed by taking short breaks, rotating tasks, and planning work to minimise risk of musculoskeletal injury.
Work may be postponed, adapted, or stopped if weather conditions make gardening activities unsafe. This includes heavy rain, storms, high winds, lightning, extreme heat, or icy conditions. Additional care will be taken in low visibility conditions.
Staff will also be mindful of outdoor hazards such as insects, stinging plants, allergenic pollens, and potential animal hazards. Where known, customers are encouraged to inform us of any specific risks at their property, such as aggressive pets or areas of structural weakness.
We take care to ensure that our gardening activities do not put customers, neighbours, visitors, or the public at risk. Measures may include keeping pathways clear, managing cables and hoses to avoid trip hazards, controlling access to areas where cutting or machinery use is in progress, and tidying up debris and waste at the end of the work period.
Where works may affect neighbouring properties, we will act reasonably to minimise disturbance, noise, and dust, and will be considerate when operating machinery.
Home Garden is committed to ongoing improvement in health and safety performance. Staff will receive appropriate information, instruction, and guidance relevant to their roles. Important safety information will be communicated clearly and reviewed as needed.
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed periodically and updated if there are significant changes in our operations, working methods, or applicable standards. We welcome feedback from customers and staff on any aspect of safety so that we can continue to enhance our services and maintain safe, healthy gardens and outdoor spaces.
